Hello, Spring! And allergies, sinus problems, headaches…

April, 2014:  Hello Spring!  And allergies, sinus problems, headaches…

It’s finally here!  Spring brings sunshine and longer days, warmer weather, and color starting to peek through.

As much as we are grateful for the change of scenery, some of us dread this season because it also means allergies, sinus pressure, headaches, and respiratory problems.

According to an article by Tracy Miller of the New York Daily news (published March 20, 2014), “Allergists are predicting a sneezy spring in the Northeast because of the long, cold winter and higher-than-average snowfall.

“We’re going to get a bumper crop of pollen starting, I would bet, next week,” said Dr. Paul Ehrlich, an allergy/asthma/immunology specialist at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. “Because the weather has been so cold, we sort of picture trees sitting with their hands on their hips saying ‘alright, we’ll wait, and then we’ll pour on the pollen.’”

“The cold weather actually makes it better for trees to pollinate,” agreed Dr. Timothy Mainardi of Hudson Allergy Tribeca.  “We had a tremendous amount of snow this year, and all that moisture is currently being drunk up by the trees.”

Some people will experience a slight delay in onset of their spring allergies because the cold weather has kept trees like birch, oak and maple from releasing their pollen, Ehrlich said.”

So what do we do?

Here are some helpful tips to keep allergies, sinus headaches and respiratory problems in check this spring:

1.  Don’t drag the pollen inside.  Take your shoes off at the door as much as possible so less pollen makes its way in your house.

2.  Close your windows and dust overhead fans.  As tempting as it is to fling open the windows, it’s better to keep them shut so as to not allow allergens to enter through the window.   If you use a ceiling fan, be sure to give it a good spring cleaning so you don’t end up circulating more dust through the room.

3.  Put some elbow grease into your spring cleaning.  Wash down your walls, get rid of clutter, clean all sheets and comforters, dust the blinds and baseboards, everywhere that you can reach and clean thoroughly.  This will help to reduce the dust and potential allergens in your home.  If you are unable to do this, hire a professional company to help.

4.  Keep your immune system as strong and healthy as possible by eating fresh, clean, nutrient rich foods.  (Ask Dr. Besso about the It Works! Greens supplement to help keep your immune system strong, or click here for more information.)

5.  Be aware of the pollen count in your area before you plan your outdoor activities.  Look it up online by zip code for the day’s pollen count at

6.  Try sipping on a warm beverage to help ease congestion and keep you hydrated.

sinus pressure headache7.  Know your sinus pressure triggers and do your best to avoid them.  This sounds obvious, but sometimes we need a reminder!

8.  Replace your air filters in your air conditioner in the house and car to help keep allergens at bay.

9.  GET ADJUSTED!  By keeping your nervous system functioning properly with regular chiropractic visits, we help the body to better defend against outside forces trying to break in and break down various systems.  Call Besso Clinic today for a Spring adjustment!  330.689.1234

Dr. Besso has helped many patients who suffer with allergies, sinus pressure and infections, pressure headaches, and various conditions related to springtime issues.  Jane F. had the following to say about her experience with NUCCA treatment at Besso Clinic:

“I have been plagued with chronic bronchitis, severe sinus infections, and adult asthma for six years! These issues caused fatigue, sleep troubles, decreased memory and ultimately depression. I went to four specialists with no help. I was taking steroids, inhalers, and breathing treatments during the day and sometimes during the night. I was also on antibiotic regimens every other month.

I had asked God to please find me an answer! That’s when my cousin called and told me about Upper Cervical Care. I told her I was out of options so I’d go.

In November I walked into The Besso Clinic of Chiropractic and this was my answer from God! It is such a gentle procedure with powerful results! I am now free of: Steroids, antibiotics, albuterol, and inhalers. I can even walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes daily, whereas before I couldn’t even walk up my stairs without stopping and catching my breath!

Since my breathing is better, fatigue, and sleeplessness are almost a thing of the past!!!

Thank you God!  Thank you Dr.Besso & Staff.”

If you know someone who suffers with similar issues like Jane’s, please call our office at 330.689.1234 and we will be happy to schedule a time for them to meet with Dr. Besso.

Kids and Chiropractic Care

March 2014:  Kids and Chiropractic Care

At Besso Clinic, we know the joy, laughter, and tremendous blessings that having a child brings.  We also know that it requires the highest level of responsibility to raise a capable, competent, compassionate little person and to set them up for their greatest success in life.

As your healthcare provider, we want to share with you how Chiropractic care can have a great impact on your children’s future health and well-being.

“But it’s just a little fall…  Should I be concerned?”  We hear this all the time from parents in our office.  The fact is, the same falls and spills you had as a kid that are now contributing to your discomfort in adulthood are the same ones that can potentially haunt your child as they get older.

From birth to adult, the trauma our bodies go through can contribute to:

-vision problems                                                         -ear infections

-asthma/respiratory problems                            -repeated infections

-bed-wetting                                                                 -constipation

-sinus infections                                                         -allergies

-poor concentration                                                  -irritability

-poor posture                                                               -mobility issues

Does your child suffer from any of these conditions?  If so, now is the time to bring them in.

SUCCESS STORY:  Please read the following Success Story written by one of our patients who consulted with Dr. Besso about her son, Jackson.

“Jackson began NUCCA treatment at Besso Clinic at age 2. He was suffering from labored breathing at night and episodes of sleep apnea. At birth he was diagnosed with torticollis (slight neck tilt) so we first sought the advice of a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. By 1 year old his condition was said to be corrected, though he continued to snore loudly and have very broken sleep patterns each night. My husband has asthma, so that was our next pursuit. We tried an inhaler for 2 months with no improvement. Next we tested for allergies-just cats of which we did not have one. We then ended up at an ENT who recommended a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, not the choice we wanted to make for our 2 year old. Fortunately, we were informed of The Besso Clinic and decided to come in for a consultation. It was made obvious to us after the first appointment that Jackson suffered from a misalignment- perhaps residual of the torticollis. After the first month we noticed significant improvement in Jackson’s breathing, energy, and overall disposition-he was definitely feeling better!

All the members of The Besso Clinic are extremely professional, and personable. Our experience has been superb!

The best part of Upper Cervical care is that it is HIGHLY effective in treating symptoms and so simple that a 2 year old will cooperate for the office visits. It’s the best and only solution to our concerns. My husband and I are very much advocates of the care given at The Besso Clinic and are hopeful chiropractic care will be the choice of many parents over medication or surgery for their children.” –Emily C.

Dr. Besso and one of our Success Story Patients!

Dr. Besso and one of our Success Story Patients!

You know that Dr. Besso has helped your neck, but did you also know that NUCCA can help low back pain?  If we address the spine from the top down, it only stands to reason that NUCCA adjustments can have a positive impact on the ENTIRE spine, including the low back, hips, and legs.

Read these two Success Stories of Besso Patients who at one time suffered with low back pain.

“I sought out Besso Clinic for treatment because my friend had received such great results under the NUCCA care and I thought I could finally find relief as well.

I had consistently suffered from severe pain in my hips, back and legs for years. I felt like I had run out of options.  I tried anti-inflammatory medications that never worked; saw my medical doctor, and even an orthopedic doctor that told me the only option left was to have my hip replaced.

When I first started care at Besso Clinic I noticed a difference within the first couple NUCCA treatments. The pain is less severe and less frequent, and now I can do some of the things I was previously unable to do like exercise!

I have recommended many people that I know to come see Dr. Besso. Overall, I have received excellent patient service and I am always greeted with a smile and kind words; they are awesome!

-Victoria M. Akron, OH.”

“When I initially met with Dr. Besso in July of 2010, I was thinking my days of golfing were nearing an end.

Increasing lower back pain, chronic in nature, was inhibiting my golf swing as well as less severe activities. My primary care physician recommended a specialist with surgery being the only practical alternative to medication (which I am not a fan of).

I began treatment at the Besso Clinic under the care of Dr. Besso and noticed significant improvements in the first few weeks of treatment.

Step by step, over the next several months my back problems progressed from what I would describe as severe, to moderate to mild!

The progress was so outstanding I continued visits with Dr. Besso on a monthly basis. Today, I have virtually “Forgotten” about my back pain! I am back to golf, hiking, biking, and many other activities I previously enjoyed.

-Wayne S., Wadsworth, Ohio”

FEBRUARY TIP:  When snow falls and it’s time to shovel the driveway, remember to keep your low back in good shape with regular adjustments, stretching, and better shoveling habits.

For more on how to keep your low back in better condition, please talk to Dr. Besso at your next appointment.

If you know someone who has low back pain that is keeping them from living the life they want, please refer them to Besso Clinic.  We are committed to helping our Patients reach their health and wellness goals – from the top down, inside out.

Homeostasis: What it means to your health

homeostasis     The word “homeostasis” describes the body’s ability to maintain relatively stable internal
conditions even though the outside world is constantly changing. Communication within
the body is essential for homeostasis and is accomplished mainly by the nervous and
endocrine systems.
The endocrine system consists of the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, pineal gland, thyroid
gland, parathyroid gland, pancreas, adrenal glands, ovaries and testes. All of the organs
of the endocrine system are glands. Glands secrete hormones or chemical messengers into the bloodstream which have the potential to change the function of almost all of the
body’s cells and tissues. When a gland is working harder than the body needs it to, the
hormone system switches off; when the body needs the gland to speed up, the nervous
system turns on the switch again.
The hypothalamus, located at the base of the brain, acts like radar receiving incoming
information from the nervous system. It then uses this information to coordinate hormone
production, producing regulatory or releasing hormones; these travel a short distance
through special blood vessels and nerve endings to the pituitary gland, which is often
referred to as the “master gland”. When the control system malfunctions – either too
much or too little of a particular hormone is secreted, or when an organ or tissue does not
respond efficiently – the results can lead to thyroid disorders, diabetes, osteoporosis, pre-
menstrual syndrome (PMS), depression, cancer and many other disorders.
The effectiveness of the hypothalamus is directly proportional to the functional capability
of the nervous system to send and receive nerve messages and especially to maintain
the integrity of those nerve messages as they travel along the spinal cord. Subluxations
interfere with the normal flow of nerve impulses and can either cause an increase or
decrease of nerve activity.
When the spine is in its optimum structural position, the nervous system is protected
and the integrity of nerve impulses traveling to and from the brain is at an optimal level.
This is when the control system of the body can best achieve homeostasis. Have you had
your spine checked for subluxation or sub-optimal structural position? If not, schedule an
appointment today to do so, your body’s homeostasis depends on it!

Small Bites from the Four Pillars of Health Wellness Series

For those of you that missed last months’ “Wellness Series,” Here are some highlights:

Note: The series covered four hours of material so these sound bites, though intriguing, are just a fraction of what you would learn attending the entire series.

Healthy fat such as that found in raw nuts, avocados, olives, egg yolks, meats and coconut oil is the preferred fuel of the body and has profound health benefits. 50-70% of your diet should consist of healthy fat. Cholesterol is vital to your health and no life form can live without it. You should eat as much as your food raw as possible, failing to do so leads to malnutrition, digestive problems and obesity.

You will never be optimally healthy unless you’re consistently exercising. Frequency, length of time and the intensity of your exercise sessions needs to be modified constantly because too much is bad for you. Anaerobic and strength training exercise are the two best types of exercise for burning fat and keeping it off. Acceleration training is the best for the immobile. Walking or running backwards is better for you than forwards.

85% or more of all diseases have an emotional element. The study of epigenetics is showing us that we can change the expression of our genes. The placebo effect is so powerful it can give you the same outcomes as if you had received arthroscopic knee surgery. You should almost never take an antidepressant for clinical depression, they work no better than a sugar pill. Too much or too little sleep accelerates tumor growth and can cause type II diabetes.

Only 15% of standard medical procedures have been proven scientifically. This is why you don’t want to go to a medical doctor for chronic conditions. One MD says, “All disease results from the disruption of the flow of intelligence.” We discussed three hypothesis for the “cause” of disruption to the flow of intelligence. I presented the most impressive studies performed to date on the efficacy and safety of upper cervical specific care.

The purpose of the “Wellness Series” is not only to educate our patients about this vital information, but be able to share it with the individuals that have not yet experienced the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle and being under upper cervical care. If you belong to a club, church or company that invites guest speakers, or would be willing to invite a guest speaker to share this series, or a portion of it, with the group, contact Sarah here at the office so our community can benefit from knowing what the four pillars of health and wellness are and begin to implement them in their lives.

Welcome to Wellness Series 2013!

As you know, Dr. Besso and I run a busy practice. We have specific objectives we want to accomplish on each one of your visits to us. Our primary objective is to assess whether or not you’re subluxated. If you are subluxated, we correct it, and then assess to make sure the correction is complete. There are reasons why we focus so intensely on this, but our focus doesn’t negate the other aspects of health and wellness. We are educated and qualified to teach you on so much more, and know it would be beneficial to you if we did! So starting Thursday, January 10, 2013 from 6:30-7:30 we are offering a series of lectures focused on the four pillars of health. Here’s a little of what you can expect at each lecture:

  1. Nutrition: Learn the most powerful tips to shed fat, regulate your hormones and detoxify your body without feeling hungry
  2. Exercise: Learn the three key factors to any exercise program whether you’re a beginner or professional athlete
  3. Emotional Wellbeing: Learn how you can positively affect the expression of your genes and what that means for your emotional and mental wellbeing
  4. The Nervous System: Learn how to maximize your nervous system health to live life to the fullest

Folks, this is serious stuff that we just can’t give due respect to in a regular office visit. In fact, I’ve had a heck of a time taking these very broad topics and constructing them into 45 minute power point presentations that I feel will give you the most important information you need to achieve optimal health and wellness. But I think I have managed to create a really great series packed with great info. So bring a friend and your questions to the “Wellness Series”, it may just transform your life!

Are Flu Shots effective in Preventing Influenza?

Flu season is upon us, and we are inundated with reminders, advice, and advertisements advising us to “Remember your  Flu Shot”. In fact, I have been reading about healthcare workers who must submit to mandatory flu shots or lose their jobs (link). Protection from influenza is an important topic. As adults responsible for the care of ourselves and our families, we want protection from the hazards of influenza. But, the question remains: What is the best way to do this?

A scientific study published in The Lancet reveals that influenza vaccines only prevent influenza in 1.5 out of every 100 adults who are injected with the flu vaccine (study link). And the risks are great. Serious reactions to the flu vaccine include, but are not limited to:
·        Life-threatening allergies to various ingredients
·        Guillain-Barre Syndrome (a severe paralytic disease that is fatal in about 1 in 20 cases)
·        Encephalitis (brain inflammation)
·        Neurological disorders
·        Thrombocytopenia (a serious blood disorder)

So, what is the alternative? A healthy immune system is strong and can often prevent influenza from being overcome by influenza. In fact, Vitamin D3 has proven far better than vaccines at preventing influenza infections. (study link)

Thankfully, our patients are Besso Clinic of Chiropractic are on the right track. Our gentle chiropractic technique aims to bring the spine into proper alignment, especially in the area of the upper cervical vertebrae. When this proper alignment is achieved, the nerves are able to properly communicate with each other. And since the nervous system controls all functions of the body- including the immune system- Chiropractic care can improve immune system function.

Of course,  getting plenty of Vitamin D, eating right including avoiding sugar, regular exercise, getting adequate sleep, and avoiding stress are also important. Try to incorporate these into your life during this season, and make time to visit Besso Clinic- and stay healthy through this flu season.
